Hondalea, a sea of bronze housed in the lighthouse on Santa Clara island
After a five-year creative process, you can now visit the work of Cristina Iglesias in San Sebastián.
Hondalea - Basque for the seabed - is the latest work by this artist from San Sebastián, 15 tonnes of bronze over a pit inside the lighthouse on the island of Santa Clara. According to Iglesias, this spectacular pit represents two concepts that have been essential to the process: the sea and depth.
It is a new experience to enjoy with your eyes and, in particular, with your ears, as it features a motor to create movements in the water imitating the tides that, as they strike the bronze structure, sound like the waves breaking on the coast.
The lighthouse will be open to the public from 5th June to 30th September, and the work can be visited from 11am to 7pm, at half-hour intervals. The guided tour will be free and must be booked in advance through the online platform.
As soon as you arrive in San Sebastián, La Concha beach invites you to take a dip or a pleasant stroll along the shore, even in winter. Its stunning bay, framed by Monte Igueldo and Santa Clara island, is world-famous. Without a doubt, an essential destination.
