Discover Basque Country
In its “Weekend Guide” section, the New York newspaper has devoted an article and a video to Bilbao, entitled “36 Hours in Bilbao.” This highlights the success of development in the city, its food and drink, cutting-edge fashion and cultural venues like the Azkuna Zentroa. The report, written by Christian L. Wright, and the video published in the NYT start out from the Guggenheim Museum, but aiming to get away from its immediate surroundings by inviting its readers to get into a whole culture waiting to be discovered in the city. The report couldn’t miss out food and drink, and recognised its importance and its high level in a city with more than just Michelin stars. The writer describes the Bilbao tram as a cute lime-green and silver caterpillar that is an excellent way to get to know the city and its people. The Fosteritos, the Metro stops designed by Norman Foster, look like giant prawns and the clear-bottomed swimming pool created by Philippe Starck for the former Alhóndiga wine warehouse call his attention before heading into the Indautxu and Villarías districts in search of the coolest, most fashionable establishments he misses in his own country and that show him that the Bilbao aesthetic was there long before Frank Gehry waved his magic wand. The cultural scene together with food and drink are the main attractions for American tourists, an increasingly important group among visitors to the Basque Country.
